Oh, hey there. How you doin’? Over a year of absolutely nothing. Hm. Not particularly likely to change, seeing as though… stuff.

This just in

I actually have more than one thing to say – but I am too lazy to make more than one post about it.
So, here goes nothin’:

I was bored. So I made stuff. And then I made some more stuff. And then some more. This all lead to this:

Steampunk Wallpaper

This is a wallpaper, if you want it. 1680*1050, as are all my wallpapers. Because that is my resolution.
The poly count is something around 7.5 million in total, rendered for no less than 17 hours and 40 minutes. And it looks totally badass.

My Desktop

My current Desktop

That is what my desktop looks like now. The icon theme is custom, made by replacing file by file by file with some I downloaded off DeviantArt. Library or something.

Dead Space
I am not particularly brave. That is something I have no real problem with, but it does lead to certain odd situations. Most of which have nothing to do with this, so let’s get on with Dead Space:
I am afraid of this video game. I know it’s just a game but holy fuck, the atmosphere is denser than Jupiter’s. Meter by meter I make my way across this hallway, mere seconds after hitting a save spot, then I spot a crate which may hold treasures such as credits or ammunition for my plasma cutter (I am still in the first chapter). I go there, the light goes out. Noise. Alt-F4. I am chicken.
However, I have watched Dead Space: Downfall and just today bought Dead Space: Martyr, a prequel novel, which I expect to arrive either on saturday or monday.
I don’t really think I will ever finish the game. It’s scary.
But some of the death animations are awesome. So funny. Hehe.

Scribble II – The Search for Skill
I have released Scribble a little over a month ago – more accurately, on the evening of december 31st, making it one of the last 2010 releases whatsoever, if not the last – and immediately started working on a new game. Now, I am not really in the mood to type all the stuff down again that I already wrote on the ModDB-Profile… so, just follow the link. It’s the same as the last one. I don’t think I’ll make a new profile for the sequel. But I haven’t worked on it for over a week now. Just didn’t feel like doing it. But don’t worry. I took a far longer break in the first Scribble and still got it released.

Er... image?

That is a name up there. Yeah, really. An actual name. Of a character in a short story I wrote last sunday evening when I felt like it. Five pages in one sitting. That is odd, because the first time within years that I am able to write fluently is when I am literally writing about insanity. Because that is more or less what Carl is about.
The story is somewhat unique – at least for my usual style of writing – in that it does not have a narrator whatsoever. It is never established what exactly happens outside of a series of logs and diary entries. Sure, some details are mentioned, others outright explained, but most of it the reader has to put together himself. Which I would consider pretty awesome to read, had I not written it which means I already know everything that happens.

I know what you’re thinking. At least if you ever heard the name Slayer before.

No, this is about a certain song by Slayer.

It’s called “Dead Skin Mask”.

Now, think a moment. Where have I seen someone with a skin mask before? Hm… oh, yes! The Texas Chain Saw Massacre!

And right you are. A bit. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was, just like Psycho, partly based on the real story of Ed Gein, who later got a movie that actually was called “Ed Gein”, but that is another story. Gein was pretty sick. Dug out corpses and cut them to pieces and murdered, I think, two people. So definitely less than either Leatherface of Norman Bates, but what he did to those corpses is just too sick.

The song at first doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Gein in particular. But somewhere near the end there is a female voice heard in the background. Upon listening to the song once or twice more, you might be able to understand what she says. Things like “Hello, Mr. Gein? Let me out here, Mr. Gein! I don’t wanna play anymore, Mr. Gein! Mr. Gein, it’s not funny anymore! Let me out of here, Mr. Gein! LET ME OUT!”

And this is mad. Sure, just what one would expect from a band singing about Josef Mengele, but even ignoring “Angel of Death”, Slayer still are fucking insane.

Not to mention that the choice of words imply that the trapped woman is in fact a young girl. Which, if I recall correctly, has no connection to Gein’s actual murders (since both women he shot were adults), which means Slayer made it up. That doesn’t really make it any better.

Ah, I see.

So, as it turns out, this client is nothing but a very rudimentary editor, few to no features. The one thing that bugs me about it is that I can apparently not set a category for the blog post. Or add pictures. Or very much anything of any importance. But I can write. Which is pretty awesome on it’s own. So I guess if I have anything important to say I will still have to access the admin panel so that I can add the neccessary media.

This is a test

Out of boredom, I decided to search for a software that allows me to write blog entries without actually accessing the blog at all. Well, found one. Hello!

Also, as it appears I have a reader. One. Seems my habit of uploading files to my webspace and linking to them (I am not violating the rules here, since I still maintain this blog) led to someone accessing the main URL and thus the blog. Not that it mattered. I don’t actually care if anyone reads this blog.

A little addendum to my previous post (which nobody read but what do I care about that):

Dvorak is an alternative keyboard layout. Almost every single letter key is somewhere else, which makes it fairly difficult to type, considering that I know the QWERTZ layout from my mind after well over a decade of using it.

Now, why am I writing this? Because practice is obviously the best way to learn it. And I think I am already getting better at it.

Looks weird, huh? That’s what it looks like to type QWERTY on a Dvorak keyboard. I changed the setting literally minutes ago and I am currently trying to get used to it. It’s really, really fucking weird.

News from the Windows

Considering how little I use Windows by now (I think I haven’t been on Windows a dozen times since January 6th), I have fucked up my system a lot in that short time.

First, Firefox ceased to work. No problem, I installed Opera.

Which refused to start two days later.

Okay, shit. What now? Internet Explorer? Go fuck yourself. No internet would be better than IE.

Chrome? Nah, that’s the 1984 of the browsers.

Iron? What is that? Ooh, Chrome without Big Brother! I’ll take it!

It’s a good browser actually. Better than expected. A little odd though, since until then I had almost exclusively been on Firefox for about five years.

Aw shit, my sister is singing. Need some loud music. Now.

“Write a drawing program”

QBasic code

Eat THAT, IT teacher!

Hell yeah. Wait, in Java? Go fuck yourself.

Seriously, Java sucks. Why on earth do we need to use it? I’d rather draw a picture with my own damned hands. And if you know me, you know how much I hate that.

Instead, I fired up my old trusty C64 and made one in Basic.

Okay, that’s a lie. I don’t have a C64. Sadly. But I did write a drawing program in Basic. I mean, why not? Of course, I am not fulfilling the task this way but heck, neither are all the others – their programs are far away from working.

My fancy piece of software is kinda like the old CAD program we had back when I was a kid and DOS was still cool. You tell the computer which shape you would like, then the color and coordinates. All by keyboard, which allows drawing very accurately.

The software checks what button you pressed, for instance R for rectangle. Then it tells you to enter a color, whether it shall be filled and the coordinates.

So, a command for drawing a simple red rectangle is somewhat like this:

r r,1,32,32,64,64

There are only three different shapes actually, and to get, let’s say, half a circle you need to draw a full one and then a black rectangle over it.

For some reason I do not fully understand, I can not take a screenshot of the running program. I suppose it has to do with the changed screenmode to get a higher resolution and – unfortunately – forced full screen.

“When an unstoppable force meets an immovable object”

This is a quote from The Dark Knight, something the Joker says to Batman. Whereas it might sound logical, there’s one big failure in this sentence: Neither exists.

Every force can be stopped if another force, as strong or stronger, is applied in the opposite direction. Even if it seems there is no stronger force, Chrysler will invent one sooner or later.

Every object can be moved if a strong enough force is applied.  You can move a house by crashing a big truck into it. You can move a planet by crashing a big planetoid into it. You can even move a World of Warcraft addict by turning off the router.

I still love that film, though I never was a fan of Batman. ‘ve seen all movies except for Batman and Batman Begins (Though I will definetely watch Batman Begins, since it features Scarecrow), but in all honesty, I didn’t like them much. The one with Jim Carrey was too riddiculous (mistake intended), also I don’t like Val Kilmer. The one with the Penguin… well, back then I was a small child and afraid of that guy.  Then there’s the one with Arnold Schwarzenegger. I think I should see that one again, I barely remember anything about it. I think it wasn’t too bad.

However, I played the new game. Arkham Asylum. I’ve barely ever seen a game made of this amount of plain awesomeness. Highly recommended. Luke Skywalker dubbed the Joker. I guess Heath Ledger was a bit too dead to do it himself. Sadly.  No seriously, as far as I read on Wikipedia, they took voice actors from the animated series or something. Still, Ledger was a bit too dead to do it himself. That’s what you get for being a gay cowboy.

(I want to ride my) Bicycle

Two decks of Bicycle Rider Back cards

Two decks of Bicycle Rider Back cards

You probably don’t know, but I got into card tricks lately. I started with a deck I got from a poker set for 10 € that contained two decks, 200 chips and a poker mat (with Black Jack stuff printed on it, duh). Unfortunately, it was already pretty worn down by a lot of Durak (a Russian card game).

It is almost impossible to get a good double lift this way, and without one of the most essential tricks proceeding is hard, as you can imagine. So I bought two decks of Bicycle Riders Back cards two days ago. Just that they are both red, as opposed to the ones in the picture. I was too lazy to search for the good camera and the flash of the not that good one is too bright.

Well, I can only say wow! Those are really awesome!

The cardboard is of higher quality than the cheap Chinese cards I used to use, the printing is better and they line up just perfect, making a proper double lift way easier.

In direct comparison to the cheap cards, I came to these conclusions:

  • The Jacks, Queens and Kings of the cheap deck are directly ripped off the Rider Back, though with thicker outlines, which makes them look way cheaper.
  • The cardboard is of way higher quality than the cheap cards, as well as the printing on the cards.
  • The box is of better quality as well. Many people – to quote George W. Bush – misunderestimate the box. If you don’t have a proper box, you might damage your cards during transport.

Their price is high, but they are totally worth the money. Whereas in the USA you can get a deck for under a dollar. Mine costed 3,20€ each, which is about $4,50. Imports ‘n stuff. If I bought a high amount of decks from amazon.com, the price might go down to 2,01€, but this is only if I order 877 of them or more, which I can no way afford and I doubt they could deliver that many decks. Another option would be asking someone at USPC, because they have that many decks. But for now two of them should be enough. After all, I am far away from being a professional. But if I ever become one (which is doubtful), I’d definetely do it that way. Because they even have more colors than just red and blue and also a lot of Gimmick cards, such as regular red back cards with entirely white front sides, which would make a great trick or business card even.
